The next morning, Rissyl woke to the sounds of birds chirping loudly. It had rained all night, and he figured that the worms had come to the surface to avoid their flooded homes. The birds sounded like they were having a grand time.
He heard Cynia moving around. “Hey, Cynia. Still mad at me?”
“Oh, Riz, I wasn’t mad at you last night. Not really. I try not to dwell on the unfairness of life, or it will consume me and make me loony. When I get talking about that stuff it’s tough not to get angry at the world. Since you were sticking up for those who made me a Dreg, you got to be the main target last night.”
“I get it. You really got an unfair deal.”
They lay there in the tent, wrapped up to their noses in their thick blankets, looking at each other. He sat up and motioned her closer to him, “Come here, please?”
She pulled her covers a little tighter, “I’m better, but I’m not in the mood for sex games. Sorry.” He couldn’t see it, but he heard the smile in her voice and that raised his spirits.
He gave her a pretend-annoyed look, “That’s not what I meant.” He held out his hand to her. “Please?”
She sat up and scooted closer to him. When she did her blanket fell down to her waist and he realized that she was wearing one of his tunics. She saw him looking at it and said, “I was cold.”
He held her right hand close to him, with his right hand over her wrist. “I want to try something. Please hold still.” He slowly summoned some magic; he molded it and shaped it, and then directed it towards the skin on her wrist. He wasn’t sure if the spell was working, but he kept trickling a little more magic as he rubbed her wrist. Before long, black liquid streamed slowly down her arm and dripped off her elbow.
Her eyes were wide, and she gently pulled her right hand back towards herself, but he held it firm. He shook his head side to side, and continued to focus on his spell. They sat like that in silence for quite a while, as the thick black liquid dripped off her elbow onto her blanket.
When he pulled his hand away, his palm and her wrist were covered with the thick black goo. With wide eyes, she pulled her hand back and wiped some of the black goo from it. When they looked at her wrist he realized that his spell succeeded. The tattoos were gone!
She sat there staring at her wrist, with her jaw hanging open. After a few moments she whispered, “Riz, what’d you do?”
He shrugged, “I removed those damned tattoos. As far as anyone knows you are not, and you never have been, a Dreg.”
She just sat and stared at her wrist. “By the gods, could it be true?” She rubbed at her wrist as if the tattoos would re-appear.
